The Papua New Guinea Institute of Medical Research conducts vital research on health priorities – from new tools and treatments to prevent malaria to vaccine efficacy studies to inform the government immunisation program, and from disease surveillance to aid responses to health threats to evaluations of health interventions. The breadth and impact of our work are significant and far-reaching.
PNGIMR’s ten-year Research Agenda emerges from two workshops that brought together nearly thirty PNGIMR researchers for robust discussions on how to address Papua New Guinea’s pressing health challenges: high morbidity and mortality, a struggling health system, and the need for evidence-based local solutions.
The Research Agenda is structured around seven research missions.
Four core programs focus on:
Infectious disease transmission mechanisms
Social science approaches to understanding health determinants
Health systems research
Management, access and use of health data
The Institute will also expand three emerging areas:
Non-communicable diseases
Food systems and nutrition
Community-driven health care
This Research Agenda will guide PNGIMR over the next decade, informing the fostering of new leadership and investments in infrastructure and technology. We invite our national and international partners join us on this journey.
