As part of the EPLD2’s planned activities this year, the 14 delegates from different Pacific countries visited PNGIMR last Tuesday, to understand, what IMR does in terms of research work. IMR’s director, Professor Peter Siba, was very happy about their visit as it will increase their understanding on what IMR does in terms of its research work in the country.

During a brief question/answer meeting with Professor Siba, he briefed them on the different research projects carried out at the Institute and also highlighted the capacity building program of IMR staff in the field of research. He said currently there are 400 staff employed by IMR, 30 are expatriates who hold senior positions especially in research units at the Institute.

“This is because we want them to mentor Papua New Guinea scientists to become specialized in their respective research fields so that we can have more PNG scientists that are well educated and more specialized to run researches within IMR,” he said.

After their meeting, the delegates comprising of participants from PNG, Fiji, New Zealand, Tonga, Australia, Kiribatu, Samoa, Cook Islands and Solomon Islands were taken on a brief tour of the different units at IMR. Team leader for the delegates, Owen Makindi, thanked PNGIMR for allowing them to see what IMR is doing in terms of medical research.
