Pneumonia Colloquium receives timely donations

By Geraldine Vilakiva

A total of K25 000 has been received by the PNG Institute of Medical Research as donations towards the organizing of the Pneumonia Colloquium which will take place in August.

The donations, K20, 000 from National Gaming and Control Board and K5, 000 from Ok Tedi Mining were a timely donation, well received by the IMR’s Pneumonia Colloquium committee and its co-hosts, National Department of Health and World Health Organization. Chairman of the committee, William Pomat, acknowledged the generous donations from the two organizations and said the money will greatly assist them with preparations for the event. Their donations are greatly appreciated.

According to Mr Pomat, it is a very big event, already attracting a lot of interests from researchers both nationally and international, many of whom have conducted studies on pneumonia in PNG over the years. The purpose of the colloquium is to celebrate 40 years of research on pneumonia in Papua New Guinea. It will include reminiscences and reflections on past research, presentations on current research and discussions aiming to identify the best ways of reducing high deaths and hospitalization from pneumonia and how to implement them. The theme for the event is ‘Action against pneumonia: A celebration of 40 years of pneumonia research in PNG and finding the best way forward’. It is a timely theme as pneumonia kills more children than HIV, tuberculosis and malaria combined, especially in developing countries like ours.

As part of the celebration there will be a focus issue of the PNG Medical Journal devoted to research and research implementation on pneumonia and other acute respiratory infections. Professor Deborah Lehmann and William Pomat are the guest editors for this issue, to be published in the Journal in 2011. The event will be held at the IMR headquarters in Goroka.
