PNG SDP donates K20,000 to PNGIMR for its 40th Anniversary & Colloquium celebrations

The PNG Sustainable Development Program donated a cheque of K20, 000 to the Papua New Guinea Institute of Medical Research towards its 40th Anniversary and Colloquium celebration which was held from the 30th of June to the 4th of July in Goroka.

PNG SDP board member Sir Ebia Olewale and PNG SDP Program Manager Mr Lawrence Stephens handed the cheque to PNGIMR director Professor Peter Siba Tuesday, 24th June 2008 at the PNGIMR headquarters in Goroka.

Mr Stephens said the PNG SDP had received a letter from Sir Peter Barter the patron of the 40th Anniversary and Colloquium, which reminded them of the history of PNGIMR in Papua New Guinea.

He said PNG SDP saw this as a good opportunity to support and shine the spot light on an institution in the country which was a silent achiever.

“We are very happy to be involved with an institution like the PNGIMR; which its research works has highlighted Papua New Guinea on the world map. PNGIMR’s research work has won two Nobel prizes and one honour with the fellow of the Royal Society. We look forward to seeing the 40th Anniversary and Colloquium become a success as the Institute’s researchers, staff and collaborators reflect on its past achievements and moves forward in delivering vital research for the health of all Papua New Guineans,” said Mr Stephens.

Sir Ebia Olewale said he is very proud of the work that PNGIMR carry’s out in terms of health research.

Director of PNGIMR Professor Peter Siba thanked PNG SDP for their support and assured them that the money donated will be used well to assist with organizing a successful colloquium.
