IMR Social Club sponsored five (5) to attend the Madang Golf Association Dance at the Madang Country Club on the 26th of April as IMR representatives.
The purpose of the sponsorship was to strengthen community relations. The need for stronger community relations was brought to light when the Shipment Officer, Roselyn Maiya was turned down by local business houses when she approached them with a letter seeking sponsorship for the Colloquium.
According to Ms Maiya, business houses were reluctant to support as they felt that IMR was not supportive in the past when their fundraising bodies had sought help in fundraising in the form of dances, corperate dinners and other social activities.
An upcoming fundraising event the following weekend enabled IMR to show their support in the form of purchasing five dance tickets, sending five IMR representatives.
The decision to sponsor arose when Ms Maiya made the ordeal known to the Colloquium and IMR Social Club Co- Chairman, Livingston Tavul.
“Help us and we will help you,” said the daughter of Golf Association President Dunkin Seko. Ms. Elena said this when interviewed during the fundraising dance. Mr Seko had been vocal about the poor support earlier when Roselyn had approached him.
The Madang Social Club is a club that helps Madang staff with minimum financial assistance especially with the rising cost of living.
Meanwhile during a Senior Staff Meeting later, Livingston briefed the Site Manager John Taime on the Social Clubs sponsorship to the Golf dance. Mr Tavul proposed to Mr Taime to negotiate for funds for activities such as the sponsorship and other social activities to enable good community relations.
He justified that this would help promote IMR thus build good strong community relations with the local business communities. Good community relations would lead to prompt support from business houses should the need to fundraise arise. The challenge is now on the Madang administration to negotiate with appropriate parties.
