Celebrations at the Papua New Guinea Institute of Medical Research (PNGIMR) in Goroka, Eastern Highlands Province to commemorate the 40th Anniversary of the premium institution have been a success.

The celebration ended on Friday night at the Bird of Paradise Hotel where visiting guests, collaborating partners in scientific and medical research and PNGIMR staff, all commended the organisers for a job well done.

More than 200 medical and social scientists from PNGIMR branches including Madang, Wewak, Maprik, Goroka and Okapa together with 52 scientists from abroad, took part in the celebration.

The celebration was marked with sporting activities including soccer, basketball and volleyball, a cultural night, presentation of medallions to long serving staff, open day at the institute and visits to tourists’ sites around Goroka.

The celebration also included a colloquium where local and international scientists presented research papers on medical and social issues on major epidemics in the country and attempts taken to curb those cases.

Topics discussed at the colloquium were respiratory diseases, virology, bacteriology and enteric diseases, vector-borne diseases, sexual health and women’s health, non-communicable diseases, genetics, kuru, International Relationships, training and discussion on where to go in the next 40 years.

PNGIMR Director, Professor Peter Siba, said the celebration was a milestone occasion for the efforts and hardwork endured by scientists and staff within the last 40 years and also a motivation for the next 40 years.

On Monday during the opening ceremony, keynote speaker Governor General, Sir Paulias Matane said PNGIMR had put PNG on the world map through research and knowledge.

Sir Paulias congratulated PNGIMR on its 40th Anniversary for gaining global recognition from the other medical fraternities around the world.

Other speakers, including the Minister for Health and HIV/AIDS Sasa Zibe and Health Secretary Dr Clement Malau also shared the same sentiments saying PNGIMR has achieved much in the last 40 years.
