![]() RD Canners Assistant Nursing Officer recieves Microscopy training in Yagaum By RHONDA CLEMENT The Microscopy Unit in IMR Yagaum received K600 cash and 2 cartons of canned fish to go towards their colloquium fundraising pursuits on the 7th of February after a RD Tuna Canners’ Assistant Nurse completed her six weeks Basic Microscopy training at the unit.
The opportunity to raise funds occurred when the section was approached by RD Canners through the Site Manager Mr John Taime, that Ms Sylvia Mange from the RD Canners was interested in undergoing basic microscopy training to enhance proper diagnostic diagnosis of malaria in RD Canners employees. After discussion with the unit’s head on workload and availability of staff, Sylvia commenced her training from the 16th – 29th of January under the supervision of experienced Microscopists, Mr Nangdao Tarongka and Lina Lorry. Ms Mange received training in; Identification of the four species of Malaria ie, Plasmodium falciparum (Pf), Plasmodium vivax (Pv), Plasmodium malariae(Pm) and Plasmodium ovalae (Po). She also underwent training on good blood smears for better slide readings; good staining and drying methods and making good staining solutions. RD Canners Company physician Dr Noemi Juele came to witness Sylvia receive a ‘Certificate of Training’ from the IMR Yagaum site manager Mr John Taime. During Dr Juele’s visit to IMR, she expressed her enthusiasm on the skills Sylvia acquired while undergoing training. She hopes to do away with this practice and deal with malaria cases using proper diagnostic techniques. She said that the purpose of the training was to upgrade the standard of the nurses at the clinic. Mr Taime said that this was a first of its kind to train people from other organizations other than IMR employees. He justified this by stating that this was good community relations practice. Meanwhile Dr Juele has expressed her interest in personally undergoing basic microscopy training at Yagaum in the near future.
