Government team visit Yagaum to outline assistance on relocation

By RHONDA CLEMENT

A team from the National Government’s Planning and Implementation Department visited Yagaum on the 27th of November 2007 to file a report, in aid for the relocation of Yagaum to the new proposed site in Madang town.

Data Manager Ms Appa Puranga explains her role to the two visitors, as Site Manager Mr John Taime, look on.

The team consisted of Rose Kemo, Development officer – Health/Education Development Monitoring & Evaluation Division and Rose Raka – Koyama Assistant Secretary – Social, Law/Justice & Administration Development Monitoring & Evaluation Division.

The purpose of their visit was; to obtain background information about PNGIMR to help the government budget for 2008 and to see the physical setting of the Yagaum site and the type of research carried out in PNGIMR so they could report back to the PNG Government to aid the relocation from Yagaum to Madang town.
They were fascinated by the large number of staff working in the Yagaum site building and stated that though the site was built on the Lutheran Mission’s Infrastructure, which had limitations to the infrastructural development; vital life saving research for Malaria and other diseases were effectivelycarried.

Ms Kemo and Ms Raka said they hoped the report they filed from their trip will influence the government’s future decision in funding the relocation of the IMR Yagaum site to Madang town.

Meanwhile land ownership of the proposed new site is still pending as IMR Management is still negotiating land titles with parties concerned.
