By Rhonda Clement

The Entomology & Molecular group of PNGIMR Yagaum, Madang hosted a “Bombom Banis” dance to raise funds for their section on the 17th of November at Gum Primary School field.

The initiative to host the dance came after the Madang Colloquium Committee allocated K500.00 to each sectional groups in October (2007).

The groups were Administration, IPTi & field staff, the Data Management Unit and the Entomology and Molecular Parasitology units in one team.

The committee informed the units to each reach a target of K2500.00 by May next year (2008) and all proceeds will aid the 40th Colloquium to be hosted in Goroka.

The opportunity to raise funds was brought to fulfillment for the hosting section, when Local Madang Artist, Luke Banag took the crowd to heel with his distinctive songs like ‘Modern Wali’ and many others; attracting people from as far as Siar on the North Coast road, town and Amele, south of Madang.

The main fundraiser for the dance was the gate takings of K3.00 per adult and K1.00 per child under the age of 12 years.
Other fundraising activities included selling of cooked foods and drinks at the stalls.

The Data Management Unit and Administration sections also sold food stuff for their respective sections at the stalls after paying a K20.00 stall fee to the hosting section.

According to the Chairperson Livingstone Tavul, the sectional fundraising is beneficial for the organisation as it will promote cooperation and participation thus bring out creative ideas from participants and will accelerate fundraising.

An expected K12, 500 is to emerge from the sectional fundraising and the other half would be made from other major fundraisings yet to come.

Meanwhile many innovative ideas are popping up from all sections on how to raise funds and staff are working around the clock to reach the targeted deadline.

A sum of K20, 000.00 is anticipated from all PNGIMR sites and the Yagaum branch is working hard to contribute its share of the potion.
