The training program, which was organised by Dr Enmoore Lin and Mr Stuart Dobbie and facilitated by VSO (Volunteer Service Overseas), saw 25 females and 26 males attend the training.

The training covered basic topics about HIV & AIDS including STIs, mode of transmission, signs and symptoms and the treatment and care needed to protect victims.

PNGIMR Madang Administration Manager, Mr John Taime, said that though talking about HIV/AIDS is alarming it is also stimulating to learn about modes of transmission and the consequences faced by victims.

“HIV/AIDS is now an epidemic in our society and it needs to be addressed by all sectors of the society. IMR staff need to have in-depth knowledge about HIVAIDS before they can assist in educating their families and friends about the mode of transmission and destruction HIV/AIDS can cause to human lives,” said Mr Taime

He said that the staff who attended the training, learnt a lot of new information on HIV/AIDS and will now be able to assist in training, teaching and educating their peers, families and communities.

“I’d like to say thank you to Dr Lin and Mr Dobbie for taking the initiative in organizing the training and the Director of PNGIMR Professor Peter Siba for approving our request. And I’d also like to extend my appreciation to VIDA (Volunteering for International development from Australia) for financially supporting the training,” said Mr Taime

He concluded that the staff learnt something new on HIV/AIDS and were hoping to learn more in future if such an opportunity is made available.
