PNGIMR Getting ready for 40th Anniversary

The Papua New Guinea Institute of Medical Research is getting ready to celebrate its 40th Anniversary of existence in the country as a Medical Research Institute since 1968.

Preparation is underway for the up coming colloquium, which would be held next year 2008 in the month of June from the 18th to the 22nd in Goroka, Eastern Highlands Province.

The Director of the Institute, Professor Peter Siba said that the three day event will comprise with three days of scientific sessions, a day for recreational activities and also sight seeing.

He said all former employees, collaborators and friends of the institute have been invited to attend this colloquium, which will have an international taste due to the large number of overseas guest attending.

The main focus of the colloquium will be to celebrate the 40 years of the Institutes existence as a research institution, and to showcase its achievements in regards to improving the life and health style of the people of PNG.

More than one hundred overseas visitors are expected to attend the colloquium and with the local participants, PNGIMR expects a total of four hundred plus participants for the colloquium.

PNGIMR’s last colloquium was held in 1993 in Madang Province where the institute celebrated its Silver jubilee (25 years of existence).

Sir Peter Barter was the patron of PNGIMR’s silver jubilee celebration in 1993 and will again be the Patron of next years 40th anniversary celebration.

The co-chairpersons of the colloquium are Samson Akunaii and Livingstone Tavul whilst the committee comprises of Martina Yambun, William Pomat and John Taime.
