The theme for 2007 International Womens Day was “Ending impunity for violence against women.”

The day’s celebration was facilitated by the head of the Molecular Biology Malaria lab Dr Jessica Markby and Scientific officer Ms Pamela Toliman with full support and contribution from the IMR women.

Their hard work and effort turned out to be a very colorful and memorable celebration, which began at lunch time with the tasting of traditional dishes from different parts of PNG, which were prepared by the different regional women groups of PNGIMR.

Everyone then moved on to the lecture theater to listen to the speeches given by prominent women.

During the speeches they were entertained by the PNGIMR New Guinea Islands (NGI) women’s traditional dancing group along with a group from the Raunraun Theater and a song about violence against women by PNGIMR Media Officer Llane Munau, PCV nurse Linda Pui and Social Research cadet Lawrencia Pirpir.

Those who gave talks were Ms Henni Kama from Save the Children, Ms Naomi Yupae from the Eastern Highlands Family Voice, Sister Maryanne from Mercy Works, Save the Children Youth Program group, Freda Talau a prominent lawyer and Susan Gandi from Healthy Women Healthy PNG.

All their talks were along the lines of the day’s theme “Ending impunity for violence against women.”

The women and girls present were encouraged to exercise their rights by reporting to the authorities if they were harassed, abused or threatened in anyway.

The overall day’s celebration was a very successful one and the PNGIMR women were commended on by women from other organisations for taking the initiative to orgainise such a successful event.

The facilitating team for the day acknowledged Director of PNGIMR Professor Peter Siba for letting the women celebrate the one day in a year event where women around the globe come together to celebrate and reflect on their successes and issues surrounding womens wellbeing.
