EPO Project Update

Enhancing Pregnancy Outcomes (EPO) acting project coordinator and logistics coordinator Mr Ali Kevin gives an update on the EPO project.

The Enhancing Pregnancy Outcomes project in partnership between UNICEF, PNGIMR and the NDoH is now well established in two districts: Maprik, East Sepik Province and Esa’ala, Milne Bay Province, where it is implementing and evaluating an intervention among women of reproductive age.

The aim of the intervention is to ensure that pregnant women are in optimal health throughout their pregnancy, so that the infant is well nourished and free from congenital diseases, and that women are more resilient to the potential hazards of late pregnancy, childbirth and the puerperal period.

With good community participation and stakeholder support, the project has met some of its goals. From the baseline evaluation (census), 7000 women of reproductive age and a cross sectional survey of 500 non pregnant women in addition to all pregnant women in each site have been recruited.

This program is being implemented as a pilot intervention, so that its effectiveness as practical health program provides a targeted package of preventive and curative care can be examined. The success of this intervention could have important implications for health policy in PNG.
