Health and Bougainville Affairs Minister Sir Peter Barter’s visit to the institute this year saw him launch the institute’s VSAT Broadband System.

Sir Peter pointed out the importance for institutions like PNGIMR and other higher learning institutions in the country to have fast access to the outside world for information.

“It is very important to have the latest broadband access to the outside world to keep up to date with the latest developments happening around the world,” he said.

He praised PNGIMR for being lucky to get connected to the VSAT broadband system.

“Such facilities like the broadband system would facilitate learning… educational institutions like universities and colleges should have such important facilities,” stressed Sir Peter.

PNGIMR Section head of IT Mr Kuzahe Iva explained that PNGIMR is now linked to the outside world through an Australian satellite.

He said information could now be downloaded at a very high speed of 512Kbps and up load at 256Kbps.
