Immunology
The immunology unit is the smallest unit in the Institute of Medical Research and is based in Goroka. The primary function of the unit has been to provide data on immune status of children and adults to acute respiratory infections cause by Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae. This data compliments data collected by the demographic unit on the pattern of ARI in the community or in hospitalised patients. In addition we have tested the immune response of children to pneumococcal capsular polysaccharide vaccine (23-valent) and have just completed analysis of data to the same vaccine given to mothers in the third-trimester of pregnancy. The result from the latest study should provide some answers on whether maternal immunisation can increase immune response to children, and hence protect them from pneumonia and other respiratory tract infections.
