Aim

The aim of GIDRTP is to produce a critical mass of PNG researchers (75 in 5 years) who are familiar with PNG culture and public health issues, who are able to conduct independent infectious disease research and who can communicate effectively within national and international health and research networks.

The Internship Program (7 weeks duration)

A total of 10 Internships are available to undergraduates and graduates each year. BSc, B Med Sci or MBBS undergraduates are able to register their Internship as work experience or as an elective and gain credit towards their degree. The Internships are of 7 weeks duration during November and December. Students will be located in Goroka for orientation and some will then be transferred to Madang or Maprik for the remainder of the program consisting of Field Work and Laboratory practice. The Honours Fellowship (15 months duration)

Five Honours Fellowships are awarded annually. All fellows are sited in Goroka initially in the orientation period in early November but may be placed in Madang subsequently. This fellowship is intensive. The Honours fellow will write 3 Essays, participate in various workshops: Biostatisics, Human Ethics Training, Epidemiology, Scientific Writing and Poster Development, give presentations on their study project and write a thesis. Masters of Medical Sciences or Masters in Biological Sciences Program (18 months duration)

Two Masters Fellowships are awarded annually. Graduates of BMed Sci, MBBS and BSci may apply. Fellows will be involved in a research project for 18 months. During this time they will be offered workshops in Epidemiology and Biostatistics. The submission of a thesis (approx 100 pages with >=500 references) is the culminating activity.Click here to download Application Masters Fellowship in PDF format (33kB)

All applicants (except Interns) must also register for their course of study with the appropriate School at the University of Papua New Guinea. This is co-ordinated through the PNGIMR study co-ordinator.
