Epidemiology
The Epidemiology unit of the PNGIMR known internally as the Asaro Surveillance Unit (ASU); its acronym meaning "finish" in the local alekano dialect is made up of two distinct disciplines in medical research; acute respiratory infections (ARI) and enteric diseases. They are headed by epidemiologists known as Principal Research Officers with special interests in each of the discipline. Until she left, the Principle Research Fellow in enteric diseases also headed research into areas affecting women's health.
The scope of activities carried out in this unit warrant at often times collaboration with expertise in other fields such as the Bacteriology, Virology and Genetics departments situated within the Institute of Medical Research building in Goroka. Collaborative work with other colleague specialists in other countries has and is compelled by their expertise or as the funding agent.
Currently the unit does not have epidemiologists for the two units since they both left in 1998 and is headed by a Scientific Officer in Epidemiology.
These section talks about epidemiological work carried out with respect to acute respiratory diseases, enteric diseases, and women's health. Other collaborative activities under the supervision of this unit are mentioned under section 4, "other activities" later in this episode.
