Safety and Security
For your safety and security, you should take preventative measure when travelling in and around Goroka town or any other places in PNG.
Like any where else in the world people need to be aware that they need to take precautions against crime. Attention needs to b taken for personal security – ask the locals for information about security risks. Walking after dark is not advised. Be aware that bag snatching does occur.
Health
We strongly recommend that you take out comprehensive travel insurance that will cover any overseas medical costs, before you depart. Confirm that your insurance covers you for the whole time you'll be here in PNG or Goroka and check what circumstances and activities are excluded in your policy.
Your doctor or travel clinic is the best source of information about preventive measures, immunisations and disease outbreaks overseas.
The Papu New Guinea Institute of Medical Research has a Clinic that is situated within the vicinity of the Institute, which is run by experinced Nursing Officers who will assist you in any issues regarding your health. Also the Goroka General Hospital is close to the Institute if there are any emergencies.
