Collaboration
Many of the Institute's research programs are collaborative and integrated in nature. This means that the assistance of colleagues in a number of scientific disciplines and with local knowledge in different areas will continue to be necessary, whatever the range of disciplines included among its own staff. The Institute welcomes collaboration, both national and international. Those who are interested are encouraged to seek help from IMR staff where this may be of value to their work; or to offer their own expertise in helping to expand the coverage and competence of the Institute's research programs.
As unique aspect of the Institute's international partnerships is that the benefit extends beyond simple twinning arrangements. The many different groups with long-term research interests in PNG have formed a 'buttressing coalition' that crosses the boundaries of national and scientific interests. Under the coordination of the IMR, members communicate with each other to provide collective support for the development of the Institute's general research infrastructure.
